Variation among bays in spatiotemporal aggregation of Baltic Sea pike highlights management complexity

چکیده

Understanding the movement ecology of fish communities is necessary to take effective management actions that aim reverse population declines, especially in stocks containing sympatric subpopulations with local adaptations, such as Northern pike (Esox lucius) Baltic Sea. We followed and survival adult for one year by tagging 198 individuals an estuary (an anadromous subpopulation) well two neighbouring bays (individuals unknown origin) acoustic transmitters. found was vital sustaining coastal stock, mainly inhabited a area radius 3 km aggregated large numbers several months prior spawning. Management should thus prioritise identify, restore, protect estuaries from exploitation. The demonstrated distinct differences spatiotemporal aggregations no to, during, spawning bay without estuaries. habitat choice during season suggests 92% sampled adjacent belong subpopulation, while 94% subpopulation(s) resident brackish spawners. Survival tagged 84% suggest low mortality fisheries top predators, which have been proposed threats populations other areas Together, these results call high resolution highlight importance detailed data.

Ecology, evolution, and management strategies of northern pike populations in the Baltic Sea

Baltic Sea populations of the northern pike (Esox lucius) have declined since the 1990s, and they face additional challenges due to ongoing climate change. Pike in the Baltic Sea spawn either in coastal bays or in freshwater streams and wetlands. Pike recruited in freshwater have been found to make up about 50 % of coastal pike stocks and to show natal homing, thus limiting gene flow among clos...

Baltic Sea management: Successes and failures

Severe environmental problems documented in the Baltic Sea in the 1960s led to the 1974 creation of the Helsinki Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area. We introduce this special issue by briefly summarizing successes and failures of Baltic environmental management in the following 40 years. The loads of many polluting substances have been greatly reduced...

Spatial heterogeneity of nutrients in the Baltic Proper, Baltic Sea

The Baltic Proper shows many signs of eutrophication. Nutrient changes over time have been discernable, and also within the Sea there are large spatial patterns. Present study analyses the spatial patterns of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus as well as dissolved silicate (DSi) in the euphotic zone for the period 1990-2001. The focus is on the spatial heterogeneity with the aim to ide...

Introduction: Baltic Sea Agriculture

A research report from the Swedish Environmental Advisory Council, titled A Strategy for Ending Eutrophication of Seas and Coasts, argues that the Baltic Sea is facing an ecological flip, associated with changes characterized by excessive algal bloom and a fishing industry in crisis (MVB 2005). Eutrophication may be the most severe of the consequences faced by the Baltic Sea. According to HELCO...

Filamentous cyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea – spatiotemporal patterns and nitrogen fixation

Summer blooms of filamentous, diazotrophic cyanobacteria are typical of the Baltic Sea Proper, and are dominated by Aphanizomenon sp. and the toxic Nodularia spumigena. Although occurring every summer, the blooms vary greatly in timing and spatial distribution, making monitoring difficult and imprecise. This thesis studies how the spatial variability of Baltic cyanobacterial blooms influences e...
